Performance Program Rock Ballet II - with SpectorDance Company and Live music composed and performed by Burkhart! This piece is everyone’s favorite and explores love! Maize: The Golden Thread is a multidisciplinary performance piece that about corn. Historically, corn is a primary food source in many cultures. The discovery of corn contributed to the transition of a human society based on hunting and gathering to a society based on agriculture. Corn has contributed to the ‘agricultural revolution’ and has been a catalyst in the forming of communities, allowing for division of labor, economic surplus, and leisure. Today, corn is a controversial topic in food production, genetic engineering, and as a fuel source. Maize, The Golden Thread uses film footage from Ecuadorian farming village where we had a first-hand look at indigenous practices around corn. Alongside each humble home is a field of corn. Each family prepares the soil, plants the seeds, tends the crop, harvests and processes the corn. In Quechua, their native language, the word for “sustainability” is translated as “to separate.” The women carefully prepare and divide the corn for various uses that include nourishment for people, for animals, for the earth, and for spirits. Maize, The Golden Thread also uses original music composed and performed by Kurt Burkhart and SpectorDance Company. The mix of dance, live music, spoken word, and visual imagery, creates a compelling amalgamation that brings ancient wisdom to life on many levels simultaneously. Maize, The Golden Thread celebrates Indigenous knowledge that reflects a deep understanding of sustainability and respect for the earth. Come to SpectorDance! See something new! Be surprised!
