King Arthur Tale is a dance piece that uses a variety of lovely Renaissance music from the 12th to the 17th centuries and text from the recorded story. This piece is an introduction to this classic tale about King Arthur, who is a near mythic figure in Celtic lore. He is presented as a military leader, king, and noted for chivalry and romance. Central to the myth of Arthur's kingdom is search for the sword with its magic power, enchanted forests and lakes, and his love of Gwenevere. He leads his followers to a deeper understanding of a life of service for the betterment of humanity, the struggle against evil, and enlightened personal power.
Real Life Stories began in August 2001 in response to the national crisis of gang violence, school violence, and the proliferation of violence in our media and culture. Fueled by these alarming statistics, Fran Spector Atkins embarked on an ambitious project to discover what effect violence is having on Monterey County youth. Spector Atkins offered workshops at the Boys and Girls Club of Seaside entitled “Inside Look: An Expressive Arts Workshop on Teen Violence.” Teens used movement, writing and talking to explore their experience with violence and the complex issues surrounding violence in our society. William Roden taped several of these rich and informative sessions on video. The stories shared by this group of teens, inspired Real Life Stories. Bullying in the schools, gangs, family pressures, media influence, lack of meaningful contact with adults, and abuse of drugs and alcohol were common themes. SpectorDance fabulous Company dancers perform this Hip Hop inspired piece. SpectorDance is planning to perform Real Life Stories next season as part of our Educational Outreach Performances in local school with the goal of impacting awareness, increasing dialogue and the capacity to make conscious choices.
