INSPIRED BY JOHN STEINBECK’S THE GRAPES OF WRATH
Figures in the Dust is a 30-minute multidisciplinary dance-based performance piece and associated educational outreach program inspired by John Steinbeck’s Pulitzer Prize winning novel The Grapes of Wrath. The dance work explores the universal themes from the novel including the despair over loss of land and loss of identity, the power of community, the necessity for meaningful work, and the human capacity to overcome obstacles, create change, and survive. Steinbeck’s The Grapes of Wrath is a national literary treasure and holds enduring lessons in history, culture, sociology, economics, and psychology. Figures in the Dust is a creative interpretation of this timeless and timely novel. Reading the book is one way to experience the power of the novel. Another way to experience the novel is through live performance. Figures in the Dust uses dance to make this novel accessible and entertaining.
